Western Isles Broadband Visit

The Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) have taken the initiative of developing a broadband network very similar to the initiative undertaken in the North West Crossborder area through the CNS project. The rationale was identical, i.e., market failure and in many localities, the lack of supply of broadband. The initiative was spearheaded by the Highlands and Islands Development Authority in partnership with the Local Authority.

In addition, the local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, are partnering Derry City Council, Donegal County Council and ERNACT in a bid to the Northern Periphery Programme (NPP). The purpose of the bid is to stimulate the usage of wireless and mobile networks and to develop a number of mobile services.

A delegation from the Western Isles intends to visit the North West Crossborder area during week commencing the 9th of June to meet their counterparts and to exchange experience in relation to both broadband projects. Consequently, during the visit they will meet members of the CNS and ERNACT Board, North West Electronics management, relevant personnel from Derry City and Donegal Councils and Dept of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI).
